What Earley learned in Miami had a profound impact on his relationship with his son, Pete. Before his trip to Miami, Earley had little understanding of mental illness. He saw it as a sign of weakness or a lack of moral fiber. He also believed that people with mental illness could simply choose to get better if they wanted to.

However, Earley’s time in Miami taught him that mental illness is a complex and debilitating disease. He also learned that people with mental illness are often stigmatized and marginalized. This new understanding helped Earley to see his son in a new light.

Earley realized that Pete was not lazy or weak-willed. He was simply struggling with a disease that he could not control. Earley also realized that he needed to be more supportive of his son. He needed to be there for Pete during his good times and his bad times.

Earley’s new understanding of mental illness also helped him to develop a closer relationship with his son. Before his trip to Miami, Earley and Pete had a strained relationship. Earley was often critical of Pete and his behavior. However, after his trip to Miami, Earley became more understanding and supportive. He also began to see Pete as a person, not just a mental illness.

The following are some specific examples of how Earley’s experience in Miami affected his relationship with Pete:
