Purpose: To examine characteristics of pathogenic disease.
Imagine you are a microorganism that has just invaded someone’s body. You are either a virus, a parasite, or a bacteria. You are writing an autobiography about your life, your experience within the human body, and the havoc you intend to wreak within your human host.
To prepare for this assignment, you should:
● Read Chapters 8 and 9
● Read additional lesson readings in the course content folder.
● Review APA writing guidelines
To complete this assignment:
1. Choose a microorganism that you want to be.
2. Write this microorganism’s autobiography. Your story must include the following details: a. The type of microorganism (name and category)
b. Where in the body you intend to reside
c. Whatyoumustdotosurvive
d. What kind of problems you will cause for your host e. What your greatest fear is
f. How you think your life will end
3. Your story should be approximately 500 words.
4. Follow APA formatting rulesANSWER
Autobiography of a Streptococcus pyogenes BacteriaI am Streptococcus pyogenes, a Gram-positive coccus bacteria that is responsible for a variety of infections in humans, including strep throat, scarlet fever, and impetigo. I can also cause more serious infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.
I am a highly adaptable microorganism and can survive in a variety of environments, including the human body. Once I have invaded the body, I typically travel through the bloodstream and settle in a specific tissue or organ. My favorite place to reside is in the throat, where I can easily spread to others through coughing and sneezing.
To survive in the human body, I must be able to evade the host’s immune system. I do this by producing a variety of toxins and enzymes that can damage the host’s cells and suppress the immune response. I also have the ability to form biofilms, which are communities of bacteria that are embedded in a protective matrix. Biofilms make it difficult for antibiotics to reach and kill me.
The problems I cause for my host vary depending on where I am located in the body. In the throat, I can cause severe inflammation and pain. In the skin, I can cause painful sores and abscesses. In the bloodstream, I can cause sepsis, which is a life-threatening condition.
My greatest fear is being killed by antibiotics. Antibiotics are drugs that can kill bacteria by targeting specific bacterial components or processes. However, I have developed resistance to many antibiotics, which makes it more difficult to treat infections caused by me.
I think my life will end when I am killed by antibiotics, or when my host dies from the infection I have caused.
My Experience in the Human Body
I recently invaded the body of a young boy named Billy. I entered his body through his nose when he breathed in a contaminated aerosol. I quickly traveled through Billy’s bloodstream and settled in his throat.
Once I was in Billy’s throat, I began to multiply rapidly. I produced toxins that caused inflammation and pain. Billy’s throat became so sore that he could hardly swallow. He also developed a fever and headache.
Billy’s parents took him to the doctor, who diagnosed him with strep throat. The doctor prescribed antibiotics, but Billy’s parents did not give him the full course of antibiotics. As a result, I was able to survive and even develop resistance to the antibiotics.
Billy’s infection spread to his bloodstream and lungs. He developed pneumonia and was hospitalized. Billy’s condition was critical, but he eventually recovered after receiving intravenous antibiotics.
The Havoc I Intend to Wreak
I intend to wreak as much havoc as I can on Billy’s body. I will continue to produce toxins and enzymes that damage his cells and suppress his immune system. I will also form biofilms to protect myself from antibiotics.
If Billy is not careful, I could spread to other parts of his body and cause more serious infections. I could also spread to other people and make them sick.
Conclusion
I am a Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, and I am a dangerous pathogen. I am capable of causing a variety of infections in humans, some of which can be life-threatening. I am able to survive in the human body by evading the immune system and forming biofilms. I am also able to develop resistance to antibiotics.
I intend to wreak as much havoc as I can on Billy’s body. I hope that this autobiography will help people to understand the dangers of infection and the importance of taking antibiotics properly.

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to understand how science can be infused with biases, forms of representation, culture and power in a way that can shape knowledge production, ideas, or behavior. We will do so by examining measures, and considering how wording, language translation, and concepts might reflect biases that are not relevant for certain ages, groups, settings, populations.
Want to learn about how we approach this for measurement in public health? Look at this article that describes the process for considering cultural validity of common measures for public health studies Translation, adaptation and validation of instruments or scales for use in cross‐cultural health care research: a clear and user‐friendly guideline – Sousa – 2011 – Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice – Wiley Online LibraryLinks to an external site.
Task
Upload critique of measure. Due Tuesday, April 4 by 11:59 pm EST. Upload the paper in word format using 1” margins and 11 point Arial font or 12 point Times New Roman font. Your critique should be no more than 1 page, double-spaced.
Find a measure of interest that is commonly used to evaluate a health outcome that you care about (for example, obesity) or that measures a structural or social determinant of health relevant to your outcome of interest (for example, poverty). evaluates the efficacy or effectiveness of a structural or social intervention to address the health outcome you have identified as your area of interest. Post an attachment of this measure or embed a link to this measure.
Second, in your written critique, explicitly discuss aspects of this measure that might be problematic for certain groups, population, settings. Consider issues relating to age, gender, setting, culture, language and more.
Not sure where to start? Consider for example, the CESD, a common assessment tool for depression symptoms. Information on the CESD including a link to the measure is found here: Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD) – Addiction Research Center – UW–Madison (wisc.edu)Links to an external site.. One of the questions in this widely used measure is stated as, “I felt that I could not shake off the blues even with the help of my family or friends.” Blues is a cultural concept that does not translate well to other non-western settings.
Consider for example different approaches to measure food security and the various biases associated with these methods: Biases in self-reported food insecurity measurement: A list experiment approach – ScienceDirectLinks to an external site.
Criteria
You must post the measure you have chosen.
You must prepare a written critique.
The content of your critique will not be graded, as this assignment really is for you to reflect on how you want to grapple with measurement in your future work, or how you can be sensitive to how to interpret scientific findings in relation to your future work. We will, however, check to see if you have completed your critique.
