Professional organizations offer many benefits to the individuals who enlist in them as well as the field or disciplines for which they are made up. Safety in numbers is a concept that applies to professional organizations. A group or an organization for example, those founded by nurses or doctors, or therapists, can provide guidance, support, and resources to the other member that may not be available or not as easy to find without the help of the organization. As stated by Baedke (2018), with the help of a professional network, you can accomplish things in less time, with less effort, and obtain better results than you could alone. Professional organizations can also be monumental in making positive changes for the field as a whole. This may include increased wages, better working conditions, additional education, and support. Professional organizations can help individuals with networking by hosting networking events which commonly have a guest speaker to provide education and insight into industry news. These events bring individuals with different backgrounds and experiences together, yet they all have their discipline in common.
When I started a new role in business development nearly ten years ago, I became a member of a local chamber of commerce. This was a wonderful experience and it granted me access to a professional organization that hosted educational speakers, and networking events, as well as time in the spotlight to introduce myself, and my organization, and deliver my pitch. I still communicate with some of the individuals I met through networking there and I feel that I have learned and developed as a professional from the things I took away from the experience.
