    13. Discuss one of Healthy People 2030’s five overarching goals related to SDOH.
    The United States Department of Health and Human Services formed the Healthy People initiative to set 10-year national objectives of improving the health and well-being of Americans. Healthy People 2030 is the fifth version of this initiative and has great emphasis on the social determinants of health (SDOH). SDOH is further divided into five categories: economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context.
    For health care access and quality, specifically, Healthy People 2030 outlines the goal of “improving health by helping people get timely, high-quality health care services” (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d.). One of the data points for this objective is to increase the number of adults and adolescents that obtain preventative health care. In 2020, there were delays in medical care because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was more prevalent among persons with underlying medical conditions, Black adults, Hispanic adults, and persons with disabilities (Czeisler et al., 2020). Similarly, Becker et al. (2021) outlines in their article how the pandemic worsened racial and income inequality in access to women’s preventative health services. Reviewing the information from both articles, it may be helpful to create measurable goals that interconnect with other SDOH initiatives to contribute to the greater goal of health equity and access.
    It may be beneficial for organizations to review the different domains of SDOH in Healthy People 2030 in line with their specific patient population. By doing so, health care providers can actively participate in making progress towards the national goal of improving the health and well-being of Americans. Personally, after reviewing some of the objectives in Healthy People 2030, I would like to work with my leadership and unit council to assess the discharge education data in postpartum patients. Through this inspection, I hope to work on initiatives that can improve the health communication between the clinicians and patients that adheres to the goals outlined in Healthy People 2030.
