    Week 3 Discussion Topic
    Discussion Topic
This week I want you to consider your role in policy change and advocacy. We have been talking about this over the past few weeks; however, how do you see your role as a bedside nurse (as many of your are not yet advanced practice nurses)? I know for a long time I did not see the point in becoming involved in policy making as a bedside nurse but as I started to practice more and more I realized as the old adage goes, “don’t complain if you don’t have a plan to fix it!!!” That very much applies, as you practice for a few years you recognize and start to question or see how a change is needed and how something might be done a different and/or a better way. Yet, to affect any ‘real’ change you need to get involved in how a policy or practice is currently in place.
I suppose this week I want each of you to consider how policy truly influences what you do as a nurse both from the perspective of where you are now and where you will potentially be as an advanced practice nurse. What role can you realistically play as an advocate for policy change, what does this process really look like not as an idea but as a reality. On that note, read the assigned articles provided this week and discuss the following
Consider the process of policy change from the perspective of both the bedside nurse and the advanced practice nurse. Consider your readings from this week that discuss what the healthcare workforce looks like, the role of information technology in healthcare and the role of board members and managers within the context of your current workplace environment. Choose a policy or practice within your current workplace environment (or if not actively practicing consider one that you have encountered while practicing at the bedside) that you wish to advocate for policy change. Describe your rationale for choosing this specific issue using supporting evidence as to why a change needs or should be made (make sure to support this response with evidence and your own insight as a practicing nurse)
Using the Framework for Planned Policy Change (as outlined in the Anders et al., 2021article) & the Health Policy Toolkit (outlined in the Kostas-Polstonet al, 2014 article; and I also included a section on Legislative Resources in this week’s Blackboard Module that can assist with this process) describe the specific steps and/or processes (in detail) you would use to make a policy change to your chosen topic at both the local (hospital or organizational level) and also at the state or national level (note that not all the steps in the Framework or the Toolkit will apply so focus on those steps and processes that do apply to your topic).
Describe how the process of this selected policy change would differ from the perspective of the bedside nurse versus that of an advanced practice nurse. Essentially this question is asking you to consider the difference in policy change engagement from the perspective of the bedside nurse compared to that of an advanced practice nurse level?
Discuss barriers and reasons nurses (at least 2 barriers) fail to participate in policy change and describe how these barriers can be addressed.
What are your personal thoughts about being involved in policy change whether at a local or state/national level. Have you been involved in policy change at any level? Why or why not? If so, describe your involvement. If not, describe why you may not have personally been involved in policy change up to this point. This is genuinely an opportunity
Please be sure to adhere to the following when posting your weekly discussions:
    1. Students are to write their name and the appropriate discussion number/discussion title in the title bar for each discussion. For example Discussion 1: Micheal Cabrera or Discussion 3: Sheila Smith. This is important in identifying that students are submitting original posts as well as response posts as required. MODULE 3 DISCUSSION
by Noelvis Santana Estevez – Tuesday, May 23, 2023, 8:15 PMNumber of replies: 1Medical professionals must uphold and uphold the rights of patients in accordance with morally acceptable principles and recognized best business practices. Here are some important ways that healthcare providers should uphold and safeguard consumer rights:
Informed Consent: Medical practitioners should ensure that patients are fully informed about their medical condition, proposed treatments, potential risks and benefits, and alternative options.
Protecting patient confidentiality and privacy is crucial. The confidentiality of patient information should be upheld by healthcare practitioners, who should only reveal it when legally obliged or with the patient’s express agreement
Respect and decency: Regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or medical problems, medical professionals should treat all patients with respect, decency, and empathy. Patients should be actively listened to during decision-making processes, and their concerns and desires should be taken into consideration.
Quality and Safety: Medical practitioners should provide care that meets the highest standards of quality and safety. This involves adhering to evidence-based practices, regularly updating knowledge and skills, and minimizing the risk of medical errors and infections.
Continuity of Care: Patients have the right to continuity of care, including appropriate referrals, timely follow-ups, and effective coordination among healthcare professionals. Medical practitioners should ensure smooth transitions between healthcare settings and maintain open lines of communication.
These principles reflect a patient-centered approach to healthcare, emphasizing the importance of respecting patients’ autonomy, dignity, and well-being. By following these best practices, medical practitioners can effectively uphold and preserve patients’ rights.

    Module 3 Discussion
by Odline Raphael – Tuesday, May 23, 2023, 8:59 PMNumber of replies: 1Patient’s rights
For healthcare professionals to build trust between the patients, it’s paramount to ensure that they respect patients’ rights. In addition, this will help them achieve a positive health outcome as patients will give a positive review of the services offered. Patients have to be treated with dignity, be allowed to make medical decisions where possible, and also get required medical care for any preexisting health conditions. We have various medical sources and associations that have bet set forth such as the American Medical Association, HIPAA, and The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act among others (AHA, 2023). Some of the advocacy priorities that the American Association of Patients’ Bill of Rights focuses on include, guaranteeing access to healthcare and provision of financial assistance, reinforcement the healthcare personnel, advancing quality, equity, and transformations, and ratifying supervisory and managerial relief.
Healthcare professionals must ensure that patient’s rights are upheld at all costs and to ensure this is achieved, they can employ the following strategies. For nurses, they can ensure that they provide nursing ethics education and training. By so doing this will help everyone to understand the rights of the patients and the best practices to apply when dealing with patients with various health conditions. On some occasions, some healthcare professionals may not have the required information to handle some patients and therefore, there is a need for ethics education and training.
Secondly, enhancing shared decision-making techniques will improve the patients’ participation in matters regarding their health for example having a chance to communicate with all parties involved in their treatment to ensure that all their health needs are expressed (Pacific, 2022). Nurses have to ensure that they access patients’ ability to participate and ensure that they discuss the shared decision-making procedure with these individuals to detect the process strengths as well as weaknesses. Healthcare professionals must ensure that they upheld high privacy to their patient data and information. This is a core value in health care to protect the data of the patients and respect their privacy.
Healthcare professionals can incorporate some other strategies to ensure that they promote patient rights, such strategies include the establishment of ethics programs which will help ensure health collaboration and enhanced decision making which are in the best practices of the patient. Through designating ethics champions will see healthcare professionals getting some rewards for their good work over time and this will greatly promote nursing ethics and facilitate ethical decision-making (Pacific, 2022). Lastly is to build awareness of the patient’s rights such as the issues of privacy and confidentiality of patient data which at times may be confusing. Recently the issue of patient data has been increasing and therefore there is a need to promote awareness on the same so that patients’ trust with their healthcare providers can be upheld.
Understanding the importance of upholding patients’ rights and the ways to promote the protection of patients’ rights is so important to scholars. It gives them a clear understanding of how to treat their patients and what they are supposed to do and what they are not required to do. Students have a chance to express their ideas on different strategies and what they think is paramount. This discussion topic gives the students a chance to understand in depth various advocacy agendas and key priorities for the AHA in 2023.

  • Describe four ways you can implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing. I

Holistic care refers to approaches and interventions that address the needs of the whole person: body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Consider the following case study:
You are caring for a first-time mother in a health clinic. While assessing the woman, you notice she is becoming visibly upset. When you ask, she notes that her mother, with whom she was very close, died last year and that she really would have loved to have shared this pregnancy with her. You empathize with the patient, as your own mother just died 6 months ago. She also notes that she and her partner have been bickering a lot lately on top of her feeling generally sore, tired, and overwhelmed.
Define holistic care in your own words. Describe four ways you can implement a holistic nursing approach to care and facilitate healing. In addition, you may consider the intersection of holistic care and caritas principles from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science
Length: A minimum of 250 words, not including references
Citations: At least one high-level scholarly reference in APA from within the last 5 years
    ANSWER
    Holistic Care Definition
Holistic care is a comprehensive approach to healthcare that addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of the whole person. It is a philosophy of care that recognizes that all aspects of a person’s life are interconnected and that healing can be promoted by addressing all of these areas.
Four Ways to Implement a Holistic Nursing Approach to Care and Facilitate Healing
Create a safe and supportive environment. This means providing a space where the patient feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings, and where they know they will be accepted and respected. It also means being mindful of the patient’s physical needs, such as providing a comfortable place to sit or lie down and ensuring that they are not in pain.
Listen to the patient’s story. This is essential for understanding the patient’s unique needs and experiences. It is also an important way to build trust and rapport with the patient.
Assess the patient’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. This can be done through a variety of methods, such as asking questions, observing the patient, and using assessment tools.
Develop a care plan that addresses all of the patient’s needs. This plan should be individualized and developed in collaboration with the patient.
Intersection of Holistic Care and Caritas Principles from Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science
Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring/Caring Science is a holistic approach to nursing that emphasizes the importance of the caring relationship between the nurse and the patient. The theory identifies five caritas processes that nurses can use to express their caring:
Presencing: Being fully present with the patient and listening to their story.
Appreciating: Recognizing and valuing the patient’s unique individuality and worth.
Caring-knowing: Using one’s knowledge and skills to provide the best possible care for the patient.
Helping-trusting: Empowering the patient to participate in their own care and to make informed decisions about their health.
Acceptance: Accepting the patient for who they are, without judgment.
These caritas processes are all essential for providing holistic care. When nurses use these processes, they are able to create a caring relationship with their patients that promotes healing.
Applying Holistic Care and Caritas Principles to the Case Study
In the case study provided, the patient is a first-time mother who is experiencing a number of challenges, including the recent death of her mother, marital conflict, and physical discomfort. A holistic nursing approach to caring for this patient would involve the following:
Creating a safe and supportive environment. The nurse would provide the patient with a comfortable place to sit and talk, and would listen to her story with empathy and understanding.
Listening to the patient’s story. The nurse would ask the patient about her experiences, including her feelings about her mother’s death, her relationship with her partner, and her pregnancy.
Assessing the patient’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. The nurse would ask the patient about her physical symptoms, her mood and emotional state, and her spiritual beliefs.
Developing a care plan that addresses all of the patient’s needs. The nurse would work with the patient to develop a plan that includes strategies for coping with her grief, improving her relationship with her partner, and managing her physical discomfort.
The nurse could also use the caritas processes of Watson’s Theory of Human Caring to support the patient’s healing. For example, the nurse could be present with the patient by listening to her story without judgment and by providing her with emotional support. The nurse could also appreciate the patient’s unique individuality and worth by acknowledging her strengths and resilience. Additionally, the nurse could use her knowledge and skills to provide the patient with information and support about coping with grief, managing conflict, and promoting physical well-being. Finally, the nurse could help the patient to trust in her own ability to cope with her challenges and to make informed decisions about her care.
By providing holistic care and using the caritas principles of Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, the nurse can help the patient to heal and to thrive in her new role as a mother.
