    Chapter 26 Discussion
Mark Ilescu is a 44-year-old client who has been diagnosed with primary hypertension. His medical history includes type 1 diabetes mellitus, with early signs of nephropathy. He had a myocardial infarction 2 years ago and has been treated with a beta-blocker, metoprolol, since that time. He has been taking hydrochlorothiazide in addition to the beta-blocker to treat his hypertension. His blood pressure today is 138/92 mm Hg, which is consistent with the readings on his last three visits. His physician has added captopril to his treatment regimen. (Learning Objectives 2, 4, 8, and 9)
    1. Mark states that he does not understand why he needs an additional medication considering his blood pressure is below 140 mm Hg systolic. How should the nurse respond?
    2. Discuss the rationale for choosing captopril in Mark’s case.
    3. What should the nurse include in teaching Mark in order to minimize adverse effects of the captopril and metoprolol?

Alex is having his first session with a counselor and is recounting his life history: I’ve just turned 20. I finished high school about two years ago, and I have been lost since then. I was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder when I was five, and it has been a struggle since then. My mother stayed home to take care of me full time. Through her effort, I thrived. I was in the gifted program from the first grade to high school. I started taking ADHD medications when I was 11. I quit taking them after I graduated high school. I suffered from severe depression to the point that I attempted to hurt myself three times. The only reason I’m still living is because of my mom. She loved me unconditionally, no matter what. I’ve had jobs here and there, but I always ended up getting fired. I now live independently, sort of, with my friends. Most of the time, my mom pays for the rent. I have a girlfriend who I get along with, and I think we are pretty solid. I am applying for jobs, but I hate being with people. I hate being in school; I think it is a colossal waste of money. My sister is a nurse. She is my mom’s star kid- accomplished and successful. My only accomplishment is my car- I love working with my car, although it’s older than me and it cost a lot of money to fix. I love driving it because I feel free when I am driving. I love playing video games, too. It’s a community that never leaves you, and I feel a great sense of belongingness with them. I can be myself when I am playing with my friends. It’s an escape for me -an emotional vacation. However, I am turning 21 soon. The pressure is getting to be too high for me to be financially independent. I don’t know what to do, where to start, or even how to start. That’s the reason why I am here. In 4-5 paragraphs, answer the following questions. Use at least two sources and cite them using APA format:
Why might Alex be finding it particularly difficult to find a job?
Alex regards himself as a lost person. What are the factors that you believe have contributed to him feeling this way?
Please write about the following: What parts of Alex’s story reminds you of your own experience in your adolescence or emerging adulthood years?
How do general theories of human growth and development relate to a young person like Alex?
What effect might Alex’s ADHD have on his development?
What concepts of human growth and development are relevant to him?

For this assessment, you will develop an 8-14 slide PowerPoint
presentation with thorough speaker’s notes designed for a hypothetical
in-service session related to the safe medication administration
improvement plan you developed in Assessment 2.
As a practicing professional, you are likely to present educational
in-services or training to staff pertaining to quality improvement (QI)
measures of safety improvement interventions. Such in-services and
training sessions should be presented in a creative and innovative
manner to hold the audience’s attention and promote knowledge
acquisition and skill application that changes practice for the better.
The teaching sessions may include a presentation, audience participation
via simulation or other interactive strategy, audiovisual media, and
    participant learning evaluation.
The use of in-services and/or training sessions has positive
implications for nursing practice by increasing staff confidence when
providing care to specific patient populations. It also allows for a
safe and nonthreatening environment where staff nurses can practice
their skills prior to a real patient event. Participation in learning
sessions fosters a team approach, collaboration, patient safety, and
greater patient satisfaction rates in the health care environment (Patel
    & Wright, 2018).
As you prepare to complete the assessment, consider the impact of
in-service training on patient outcomes as well as practice outcomes for
staff nurses. Be sure to support your thoughts on the effectiveness of
educating and training staff to increase the quality of care provided to
patients by examining the literature and established best practices.
You are encouraged to explore the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies
Review activity before you develop the Improvement Plan In-Service
Presentation. This activity will help you review your understanding of
the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies—especially those related to
competencies relevant to developing an effective training session and
presentation. This is for your own practice and self-assessment, and
demonstrates your engagement in the course.
Demonstration of Proficiency By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate
your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment
    criteria:
Competency 1: Analyze the elements of a successful quality improvement initiative.
Explain the need and process to improve safety outcomes related to medication administration.
Create resources or activities to encourage skill development
and process understanding related to a safety improvement initiative on
    medication administration.
Competency 4: Explain the nurse’s role in coordinating care to enhance quality and reduce costs.
List clearly the purpose and goals of an in-service session focusing on safe medication administration for nurses.
Explain audience’s role in and importance of making the improvement plan focusing on medication administration successful.
Competency 5: Apply professional, scholarly, evidence-based
strategies to communicate in a manner that supports safe and effective
    patient care.
Slides are easy to read and error free. Detailed speaker notes
are provided. Speaker notes are clear, organized, and professionally
    presented.
Organize content with clear purpose or goals and with relevant and evidence-based sources (published within 5 years).

interprofessional simulation in nursing education to improve teamwork
and collaboration in maternal child nursing. Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing, 47(3), s16–s17.
Professional Context As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, you will often find yourself in a
position to lead and educate other nurses. This colleague-to-colleague
education can take many forms, from mentoring to informal explanations
on best practices to formal in-service training. In-services are an
effective way to train a large group. Preparing to run an in-service may
be daunting, as the facilitator must develop his or her message around
the topic while designing activities to help the target audience learn
and practice. By improving understanding and competence around designing
and delivering in-service training, a BSN practitioner can demonstrate
leadership and prove him- or herself a valuable resource to others.
Scenario For this assessment it is suggested you take one of two approaches:
Build on the work that you have done in your first two assessments
and create an agenda and PowerPoint of an educational in-service
session that would help a specific staff audience learn, provide
feedback, and understand their roles and practice new skills related to
your safety improvement plan pertaining to medication administration, or
Locate a safety improvement plan through an external resource and
create an agenda and PowerPoint of an educational in-service session
that would help a specific staff audience learn, provide feedback, and
understand their roles and practice new skills related to the issues and
improvement goals pertaining to medication administration safety.
Instructions The final deliverable for this assessment will be a PowerPoint
presentation with detailed presenter’s notes representing the material
you would deliver at an in-service session to raise awareness of your
chosen safety improvement initiative focusing on medication
administration and to explain the need for it. Additionally, you must
educate the audience as to their role and importance to the success of
the initiative. This includes providing examples and practice
opportunities to test out new ideas or practices related to the safety
    improvement initiative.
Be sure that your presentation addresses the following, which
corresponds to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Please study
the scoring guide carefully so you understand what is needed for a
    distinguished score.
List the purpose and goals of an in-service session focusing on safe medication administration for nurses.
Explain the need for and process to improve safety outcomes related to medication administration.
Explain to the audience their role and importance of making the
improvement plan focusing on medication administration successful.
Create resources or activities to encourage skill development and
process understanding related to a safety improvement initiative on
    medication administration.
Communicate with nurses in a respectful and informative way that
clearly presents expectations and solicits feedback on communication
    strategies for future improvement.
There are various ways to structure an in-service session; below is just one example:
    Part 1: Agenda and Outcomes.
Explain to your audience what they are going to learn or do, and what they are expected to take away.
    Part 2: Safety Improvement Plan.
Give an overview of the current problem focusing on medication
administration, the proposed plan, and what the improvement plan is
    trying to address.
Explain why it is important for the organization to address the current situation.
Part 3: Audience’s Role and Importance.
Discuss how the staff audience will be expected to help implement and drive the improvement plan.
Explain why they are critical to the success of the improvement plan focusing on medication administration.
Describe how their work could benefit from embracing their role in the plan.
Part 4: New Process and Skills Practice.
    Explain new processes or skills.
Develop an activity that allows the staff audience to practice and ask questions about these new processes and skills.
In the notes section of your PowerPoint, brainstorm potential responses to likely questions or concerns.
    Part 5: Soliciting Feedback.
Describe how you would solicit feedback from the audience on the improvement plan and the in-service.
Explain how you might integrate this feedback for future improvements.
Remember to account for activity and discussion time. For tips on developing PowerPoint presentations, refer to:
    Capella University Library: PowerPoint Presentations.
Guidelines for Effective PowerPoint Presentations [PPTX].
    Additional Requirements Presentation length: There is no required length;
use just enough slides to address all the necessary elements. Remember
to use short, concise bullet points on the slides and expand on your
points in the presenter’s notes. If you use 2 or 3 slides to address
each of the parts in the above example, your presentation would be at
least 10 slides and no more than 15 slides (not including the title,
    conclusion, or references slides).
Speaker notes: Speaker notes (located under each
slide) should reflect what you would actually say if you were delivering
the presentation to an audience. This presentation does NOT require
audio or a transcript. Another presenter would be able to use the
presentation by following the speaker’s notes.
APA format: Use APA formatting for in-text citations. Include an APA-formatted reference slide at the end of your presentation.
Number of references: Cite a minimum of 3 sources
of scholarly or professional evidence to support your assertions.
Resources should be no more than 5 years old.

please comment to each post and ask each one a question please.
    1. After carefully viewing and analyzing Toni’s case, the patient exhibits factors that can be assigned to the different focuses in pathophysiology. To begin with, Mr. Jones’ condition’s etiology includes a hoarse voice, wheezing, and a chronic cough over the past two weeks. This is what Mr. Jones got admitted with and displayed in the beginning. Next, his risk factors, or factors that cause a disease to develop (Stewart, n.d.), include smoking, alcohol use, and heroin use. The pathogenesis of Mr. Jones’ condition, or the evolution of disease (Banasik, J.L., 2021), began with a history of hypertension, iron deficiency, anemia, and occasionally bloody sputum over the past year, and recently his symptoms progressed to become wheezing, a hoarse voice, and a chronic cough.
With the help of a chest X-ray, the nurses in charge could reveal a mass and a lesion of the upper right lobe. The clinical manifestations that Mr. Jones presented include wheezing, dullness/lesion in the upper right lobe, low RBCs and platelets, and an elevated level of carcinoma embryonic antigen. Mr. Jones then had to forego treatment and management. His nurses ordered a chest X-ray. Following that, there was a referral to an oncologist for a lung biopsy to determine whether the tumor was benign or malignant.
2.Toni’s case involves a patient who has been confirmed to be a persistent smoker. According to his observations, he has a history of persistent coughing and wheezing, as well as a raspy voice. All of these things have an impact on the respiratory system. Etiology is the study of the implied cause or causes of a certain disease process, which can be related to biological factors and environmental effects (Banasik, 2021). Given the symptoms he has been experiencing, the patient’s etiology is lung-related, and it could likely be lung cancer. The risk factors include heavy smoking, the consumption of alcohol, and heroin usage. Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer death, and its development is primarily associated with smoking (Banasik, 2021). The patient established that he had been a heavy smoker for many years, putting him at risk for COPD or lung cancer. A physician decides on the best course of action for lung cancer treatment depending on the patient’s general health, the severity of the disease, and the sorts of interventions that the patient would want to undergo. Treatment options for the patient include surgery, in which a surgeon works to remove the lung cancer and a portion of the surrounding tissues, radiation therapy, in which x-rays are used to kill the cancer cells, chemotherapy, in which drugs are used to kill the cancer cells, and palliative care, that serves manage signs and symptoms while receiving and following cancer treatment (Lung Cancer – Diagnosis and Treatment – Mayo Clinic, 2022).
