Mental Health Crisis
The mental health crisis in America is an ongoing issue that continues to affect all populations. More than 1 in 5 US adults live with a mental illness. About 1 in 25 U.S. adults lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression (CDC,2023).
Social Determinant
Social determinants play a major role in the rise of mental health issues in America. Inequalities in income and work play a role in the rise of mental health issues. Social determinants such as adverse early childhood experiences such as trauma; history of abuse, abuse of alcohol and drugs, and chronic medical conditions can impact a person’s mental health (Compton & Shim, 2015). Unstable living conditions increase the likeliness of self-harm, suicide attempts, and increase in depression (Alegria et al, 2018).
President’s Approaches
The current Biden- Harris administration plans to attack the mental health crisis head on by implementing new policies into the healthcare system. The President’s American Rescue Plan (ARP) and Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) have been designed and implemented to fund access to mental health services across all lifespans (White House, 2023).
The President American rescue plan and Bipartisan safer communities act plan to increase the size and diversity of the mental health force, expand access to peer support, support mental health of healthcare workers, and also promote behavioral health equality (White House, 2023).
The Trump administration was committed to preventing suicide, and ending the opioid crisis, which would improve mental and behavioral health (Executive Order on Saving Lives through Increased Support for Mental- and Behavioral-Health Needs – the White House, n.d.).
What could be Done Differently
The Biden and Trump administration have made great strides on the mental health crisis. I think both presidents and the bill’s, policies, and acts that they have passed address the social determinants of the community while also providing the care and funding needed for mental and behavioral health issues. President Biden’s campaign provided more in depth information and resources to the underserved populations as well as health care workers in order to combat the mental health crisis. As an ICU nurse and working the entire pandemic I hope that mental health becomes more of a focus in health care and that it is taken seriously . Nurses and other health care professionals were on the frontline of the most catastrophic event the world has seen in years and probably decades. As a whole we are all in need and owed mental health support. I hope that diversity and expansion in mental health becomes a focus in healthcare and that we are all allotted the resources to become successful individuals
