Topic: Executive Summary to Administration
Create a hypothetical data set of 10 patients in an Excel spreadsheet that demonstrates the results of an informatics initiative. Write a 1-2 page executive summary explaining the spreadsheet and the results of the initiative.
INTRODUCTIONNursing Informatics can provide health care organization executives with critical information to aid them in prioritizing organizational initiatives and measuring organizational results. Nowhere is this more important than in the realm of ethics and regulation. Once gathered, it is imperative data be accurately interpreted and efficiently communicated to key stakeholders for use in on-going decision making.
OVERVIEWThere can be tremendous legal ramifications if regulatory and legal requirements are not met. Demonstrate the science of informatics in an executive summary to administration highlighting the importance of ethics and regulation.
Identify a specific organizational health care outcome that benefits from the use of informatics and supports the strategic plan of an organization, keeping in compliance with ethics and regulations. This assessment has two parts:
Part 1—Spreadsheet
Create a HIPAA compliant spreadsheet (you can find, create, or use data from your practice setting) of the initiative. This is a basic Excel spreadsheet for one identified patient population issue using the requirements described below.
Part 2—Executive Summary
Develop a 1–2 page narrative in the form of an executive summary to explain the spreadsheet. As you prepare the content for your summary, consider the following:Your target audience. Keep in mind that the goal of this summary is to ensure that stakeholders have accurate and concise data, information, and plans.
The importance of creating a HIPAA compliant spreadsheet.
How selected theory or conceptual models were used to effect the change.
How standards of practice were used to effect the change.
An explanation of the trending of data and how this helped the organization understand the current health care outcome.Define baseline data, how often you measured data for data trending, and why this was important for the organization to understand related to safe practice.
The use of regulatory information supporting informatics as science to produce safe practice.
Review the Executive Summary to Administration scoring guide prior to submission to ensure you address all required grading criteria
Example Assessment: You may use the assessment examples, linked in the Assessment Examples resource study, to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSPart 1—Spreadsheet:
A basic Excel spreadsheet using:10 hypothetical de-identified patients.
Trending data for each of 2 quantitative data criteria.
2 Excel formulas (addition, multiplication, et cetera).
Part 2—Executive Summary:
Title page: Include a running head your name, course, date, and faculty name.
Reference: Include 5–7 scholarly sources. Additional references may be used.
Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.

Discuss the values, attitudes, knowledge and skills that will contribute to your success in an APN role and how you can break from your peer relationships in order to form new ones. Identify which of the MSN essential(s) this assignment meets.
Transitioning from the role of RN to APN will bring many challenges. There are skills and knowledge that this nurse has now that will assist with the adjustment phase. Some of the values this nurse currently demonstrates in the workplace when caring for individuals are respect for others, providing dignity, and showing compassion. This nurse displays a caring attitude and feelings of responsibility for the wellbeing of the patients in their care. Knowledge of disease processes and medications allow for this nurse to provide quality care in the RN role. These are all tools to take along during the transition to APN. In the advanced role, the practitioner has the obligation to manage the health of the patient in a more direct manner. As the task of deciding how to manage care becomes the new normal for this nurse, the attitude of caring and responsibility will positively affect the care the patient receives by ensuring all aspects of needs are met. This includes investigating deficits in the home environment, medication, or therapy knowledge, and then going beyond the RN role to order the needed images, labs, or procedures, or consult with interdisciplinarians to help meet those needs. Respecting the patient and their wishes is intertwined in both roles, but as the APN, the obligation to provide informed consent and counsel on disease processes and medications will take precedence as this will become the APN’s responsibility to provide the patient with as much information as possible to make a well-informed decision.
This nurse has been an RN for several years. The values, knowledge, and beliefs this nurse has about healthcare is directly related to her nursing role. Transitioning to an advanced practitioner will bring challenges in the transition phase of RN to APN. Having a good foundation of nursing knowledge and skill is key and will assist with growing professional relationships with advanced practice professionals by displaying competence. To form new relationships in the APN role, Kerr and Macaskill (2020) state having mentoring and group networking with other distinguished advanced professionals will ease the transition. The APN in training will need mentors and preceptors throughout the process of school and beyond to give feedback and support while learning the role (Kerr & Macaskill, 2020). As this nurse progresses through her training, the relationships with peers of today will transition into friendships. By socializing with a group of advanced practitioners, this nurse will begin to pick up new ways of thinking and new behaviors that will prepare her for her new role (Joel, 2022). This nurse plans to join national, state, and local nurse practitioners’ groups, such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, to network and form relationships while training for the role.
This assignment describes all the MSN essentials as the advanced role encompasses all 10 domains to provide the highest quality care for the public. The essentials this nurse believes are the most important, personally, are described below.
Person-centered care is the foundation for the values, attitudes, and knowledge for this nurse. Person-centered care is described as meeting the needs of the person, family, and community (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2023). To do this, the APN uses their foundational knowledge of nursing and expands upon it to meet the needs of others through utilizing clinical data, researching the needs not met, counseling, ordering and/or prescribing (Smith et al., 2022). Person-centered care is why all healthcare professionals do what they do. The role of APN exists to help bridge the gap between the RN role and advanced clinical competency to provide the individual and their families and communities with holistic care.
Knowledge for nursing practice is intertwined with person-centered care. Using skills developed in the RN role, such as screening, interpreting, and making nursing diagnoses for fall and pressure wound risk, goes beyond simple interventions in the APN role. The advanced professional must use clinical judgement, interpret research data, labs, or diagnostic imaging to adequately make a sound assessment (Mortimore et al., 2021). The APN uses her knowledge and experience as an RN and combines it with her advanced training to complete the circle of holistic health services. The advanced nurse may also involve other disciplinarians for consultation if needed and will be discussed below. Self-sufficiency and independence in making decisions about care is what separates the APN from the RN and is why the APN must have foundational knowledge and expertise in the role and hold themselves responsible for any decision made (Mortimore et al., 2022).
Interprofessional partnerships are necessary for providing quality care safely and competently. Forming positive relationships with other healthcare providers builds confidence with those clinicians in the APN’s ability to provide care and increases belief in oneself to provide that care (Smith et al., 2022). The APN my be consulted or be the consultee during an interprofessional relationship and the 10 domains of MSN essentials will become an integral part of clinical decision-making. It is imperative this APN in training begin building relationships with other providers now. During the training phase and beyond, this nurse will have the confidence in the clinical assessments they make through consulting and learning from others, and those providers learn to have confidence in the training APN as they teach and watch the nurse grow into her professional role. Eventually, the APN should be progressing towards proficiency and expertise in their role and will one day be a resource for their specialized discipline for other professionals to consult (Smith et al., 2022).
The hope of this APN in training is to utilize the core competencies of the advanced practitioner, learn from other advanced practitioners and providers, and network with these providers to become a competent, trustworthy, and safe practitioner.

Case StudyMrs. Smith is an 88-year-old female who lives alone in her home. She walks with a walker. Last night, Mrs. Smith needed to go to the bathroom. She got out of her bed and walked to the bathroom without using her walker. In the morning her daughter came to the house to check on her. She found her mom on the bathroom floor. She called the ambulance and her mom was taken to the emergency room. In the emergency room, the patient states, “She lost her balance in the bathroom when she was washing her hands and fell to the floor.” According to the daughter, her mom has lost her balance many times but never fell. She doesn’t always use her walker in the house. Her daughter also states, “She needs help getting dressed, taking a shower, and making her meals.” Mrs. Smith states her pain is an 8 out of 10 on a numeric scale of 0 to 10. She also states the pain is constant, worse with movement, and radiates down her leg. Her legs feel weak. The nurse performs an assessment on the patient. She is unable to stand in and apply weight to her legs. The patient is weak in the upper extremities and lower extremities. She is unable to lift her legs off the bed. She is unable to turn from on her side without assistance. She is unable to pull her body up in the bed.

Differential diagnosis is a process that helps to deduce from patient symptoms the root causation for proper treatment. In doing this it can help to analyze and diagnose particular diseases from other similar clinical disease presentations. This process is started by obtaining a detailed medical history as well as integrating how the patient presents in clinic and the provider assessment. Symptoms of disease may present similarly but using differential diagnosis process helps the provider to deliver the most educated information and diagnosis for the patient. This is important to ensure proper treatment and procedure is followed. The patient’s information like their gender, age, medical history, and family medical history are taken into account. Further information may be requested such as imaging, radiology, laboratory tests, and diagnostic tests may help to obtain further information to narrow down the diagnosis. There are risks involved such as unnecessary testing and financial burden, misdiagnosis, as well as delayed diagnosis due to delayed data from testing. Benefits from this are early diagnosis which can lead to preventative care and treatment to help stop disease progression early. This can decrease overall medical costs as well as improved patient outcomes. Differential diagnosis is very important for the provider to be utilizing properly to provide the best quality of care to guide future clinical decisions such as medication prescriptions, treatments provided, as well as educational information provided to the patient. An example of this could be a patient presenting with chest pain. It’s important to see if the pain is radiating to the right shoulder indicating a heart attack, chest pain could be a result from a panic attack, pulmonary issues, another indication could be heartburn. All present with “chest pain” but treatments drastically differ. In some cases it is difficult to differentiate by imaging alone, all history and findings should be considered to make the final diagnosis. Testing is a great value in early screening, differential diagnosis, and disease severity assessment (Dai et al., 2020). Using proper differential diagnosis will help to guide our care to result in the best result and interest of the patient. Delivering patient focused care is incredibly important and needs to be the focal point of our future care.
