    Perception of Psychology
    Question A
Psychoanalytic theory suggests that some memories can be so painful, that a person can totally block them from their conscious memory and then later “recover” them; either spontaneously or while receiving therapy. Others argue that these are false memories that can be created through the power of suggestion for some people. Which viewpoint do you agree with and why? Have you had a memory that later turned out to be incorrect? What do you think was the cause of the error in your recollection?
    Question B
Public perception of psychology tends not to portray the entire scope of the field. To evaluate this statement please ask three people who are not in this psychology class (e.g., roommates, parents, friends and professors from other fields) what they think psychologists do. Next, compile a list of the ideas and then compare this list to Chapter 1 of the textbook. What did your small sample miss? What did they over-represent? Why do you think these misperceptions exist?

Posta brief explanation of the high-risk behaviors that Dani is exhibiting.
While reading over the case, Dani had a lot of high-risk behaviors that she was showing not only at home, but in the school as well. A few of them being argumentative behavior with authority figures, physical altercations with peers, poor concentration in class, irritable mood, verbal combativeness when confronted, truancy, and highly sexualized behavior with male peers Walden University, LLC. (2021).
Describe the theoretical approaches and practice skills you would employ in working with Dani. How might familial relationships influence Dani’s mood and behavior?
A theoretical approach I would use would be Dialectical Behavioral therapy (DBT). I would focus on the skill of interpersonal effectiveness. This will allow for Dani to be able to understand what it is that she needs exactly from her parents and being able to communicate it effectively. Clearly, she was able to express to the therapist that she felt structure was needed in her home from her parents. Dani also expressed that the lack of parental presence at home has contributed to her behavior. Dani expressed that her parents stopped being present and available once her sister went away to school. She said she spent more time on her own and her behavior was under more scrutiny. Dani also talked about the dynamic between her and her sister and how they didn’t get along. I fell a lot of that had to do with her always being compared to her and being told that she basically could never be what her sister was. That can cause a lot of resentment between her and her sister. This is clearly the case now. The fact that her father wasn’t present also had a lot to do with him not really understanding what Dani was experiencing. It seems as if he was seeing and hearing things second hand due to his work schedule so that had a huge impact on how he viewed the situation.

Post a brief explanation of the high-risk behaviors that Dani is exhibiting.
Based on the reading Dani exhibited various high-risk behaviors at school and at home. The behaviors that Dani exhibited we argumentative behavior with authority figures, physical altercations with peer, truancy, highly sexualized behavior with male peers, extremely impulsiveness, and use of alcohol. (Walden University, LLC. (2021). Dani is acting out and could affect her in the long run.
Describe the theoretical approaches and practice skills you would employ in working with Dani.
The theoretical approach and practice skills I would employ in working with Dani are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Functional Family Therapy. CBT will help Dani learn about her perceptions directly influence how she responds to specific situations. Dani and the therapist would focus on what comes to Dani’s mind and will be able to reveal personal issues with fear of judgement (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), 2023). I think this type of therapy would be beneficial for Dani. Functional Family Therapy helps teens and families look for solutions while building trust and respect for everyone. This would be beneficial for the family because Dani is going through a lot of emotions due to the house dynamic changing and a solution is needed to help Dani get grounded again.
How might familial relationships influence Dani’s mood and behavior?
The relationships between her, her parents, and her siblings had a negative influence on Dani’s mood and behavior. Dani stated that her home dynamic has changed because her sister has moved out of the home. She indicated that the mother and father were not present or available in the home. She stated that she felt unsuccessful compared to her sister. During family sessions they addressed the communication breakdown between Dani and her mother. Both parents are always busy and unavailable which causes Dani to “act out”. In my opinion, I think the shift in behavior is a cry for help.

  • Describe how self-justification affects science?

Read the three chapters below in the book by Travis and Aronson (2008). It might be helpful to read over the Festinger and Carlsmith (1959) article that is used in your article review prior to reading the chapters (Aronson was Festinger’s student and much of the work is based on ideas in the classic article). Please discuss these chapters with these specific questions in mind:
Tavris, C., & Aronson, E. (2008). Mistakes were made (but not by me): Why we justify foolish beliefs, bad decisions, and hurtful acts. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Chapter 4: Good intentions, bad science: The closed-loop of clinical judgment
    Chapter 5: Law and disorder
    Chapter 6: Love’s assassin: Self-justification in marriage
Describe how self-justification affects science? Apply these ideas to how you are going to conduct science in your dissertation or master’s thesis. You can also describe how these ideas generalize or recent reports where self-justification in science may have been seen.
Describe how self-justification affects the law? Take these ideas and generalize them to other areas.
Describe how self-justification affects relationships? Without going into too much personal information, how can this information help people make better (or worse) relationships?

Use the following questions to help you summarize the article. Answering these questions will help you to map out all of the information that should be included in a thorough summary.
    Introduction
What was the researcher interested in (what was the research topic)?
What were the variables? How were they conceptually defined? (See Chapter 4, Psychological Measurement Links to an external site.; especially section 21. Practical Strategies for Psychological Measurement)
What were the researcher’s research questions and/or hypothesis?
    Methods
    Sample:
Describe the sample – sample size (how many), gender, age, ethnicity and race, any other important demographic information.
    How were they recruited?
    Design:
Was the research experimental or non-experimental?
    If non-experimental:
Was it simply describing variable(s), or was it correlational?
    If experimental:
What was the independent variable(s)? What was the dependent variable(s)?
    Was a between-subjects or within-subjects design used?
    Measures:
How did they operationally define their variables?
I.e., what measures where used? (What are they called and what do they measure?)
    Procedures:
What did the participants have to do?
    Results
What did the researchers find/what were the results?
Note: for this section, you do not need to include any statistical information. Using everyday language, explain what the main findings were.
    Discussion
What explanations (possible reasons) does the researcher give for the results? In other words, why do they think they found what they did?
What were the limitations of the study?
What do the researchers recommend future research should do?
