ETHICAL PRINCIPALS AND PERSONAL VALUES
The ACA Code of Ethics is based on six fundamental principles of ethical and professional behavior: nonmaleficence, beneficence, autonomy, veracity, justice, and fidelity. In your Learning Resources, you listened to seven faculty discuss these principles. For your Discussion this week, you will review the resources and consider how you have been able to develop your own personal morals, values, and ethical compass for behavior. You will also explore when it can be difficult to apply ethical principles in professional practice and practice applying an ethical decision-making process.

Pick an empirical research article from the psychology literature (published in 2005 or later) related to a cultural topic of interest to you. Answer the following questions:
• Briefly summarize the article and its findings (30 points)
Discuss the background literature and why the authors chose to conduct the study, the study hypotheses, summary of results (no need to include specific numbers), and conclusions of the research findings
• Did authors acknowledge cultural variables in a meaningful way (i.e., beyond the mentioning of sample demographics such as race/ethnicity, or simply using a White comparison group? If so, what role did culture play in formulating the theory, hypotheses, and results of the study? If not, how would you change the study to incorporate culture in a meaningful way? • What are the implications of the study findings? That is, how do the findings of the study apply to the “real world?” What is an example? -

For this assignment, you will apply an EFT lens to examine a case scenario where the rules have changed in a relationship. You will consider how EFT could be integrated into a case to best approach a presenting problem (rule or role change). This paper includes three parts.
Part 1 – The Relationship
You will create a scenario of clients that are coming in for relationship counseling because of a major shift in role or rule changes. Pick one of the following scenarios to create a case for your paper:
A couple that has been together a while and had specific gender roles that were agreed upon; however, one partner feels a need to shift these.
Partners where one person is seeking sexual experiences that the other partner is uncomfortable with.
When a person in a couple relationship “comes out” as a sexual or gender minority.
When a couple (or one person in a couple) decides that they need to separate or get a divorce.
When there is a break in trust in relationships (e.g., infidelity).
When one, or more than one, partner feels stuck in roles defined by the extended family culture or spiritual background.
The first part of your paper will be a case conceptualization of your fictional case. You will expand on the chosen scenario that you picked, be creative. Your case conceptualization (1-2 pages) should include:
A clear description of the presenting problem.
Background of the clients (e.g., important or notable aspects of what they bring with them, could include age, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, culture, mental health background, physical health background, etc.).
A discussion of the systemic elements you see within the relationship (e.g., what are their patterns of interaction).
The strengths that you see in the couple and the individual.
An EFT therapeutic goal for the partners.
Part 2 – Model Description and Application
Write a 1 to 2-page description of the EFT model and how it can be applied to relationship work.
Part 3 – Interventions
Write a 1 to 2-page summary of the major EFT interventions that you might apply to working with your fictional case and your reflections on applying the model to this case.
Length: 4-6 pages
References: Include a minimum of 4 scholarly resources.
The completed assignment should address all of the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA standards, and adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

A Look into the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Idealists and Crafter
In this week’s dialogue, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages associated with the Idealists and Crafter in me. I will also give a very brief synopsis of Extraversion and Conscientiousness, which are two of the Big Five personality categories. I will be taking a look at how they may relate to the Idealists.
Opposites attract, so the old adage says, the proverb which comes from voices of the young and old, also brings advantages for the Idealist and me, the Crafter. Two unusual companions but with like-minded views and talents. They are both passionate about their skilled performance of job duties and their own recreation. We share in the strong bonds of family and friends. And go above and beyond our capabilities to help in times of need.
A disadvantage of the Idealists is seen in their focus on what ifs, instead of, what is. Whereas the Crafter is more secure with their own personal self. With the Crafters concrete Artisan intelligence, they have a solid foundation. The Idealists lean more to being a dreamer.
Both the Idealists and Crafter could exhibit factors of the Extraversion personality factor. The ones that lean toward introverts are more reserved rather than being unfriendly. Looking at the Conscientiousness category of the Big Five personalities, the Idealists manifest more of the daredevil that possesses him with exploits of danger. The Crafter will need to reign in his vain lifestyle to build a working relationship with the Idealists. -

Part I:
Select a special population (CHOOSE a population pertaining to LGBTQ ) that you are interested in knowing more about pertaining to clinical practice with individuals with addictive behaviors and their families. Topics may include, for example, an ethnic group, adolescents, older adults, sexual minorities, persons with co-morbid disorders, men or women, methadone maintenance, or impaired professionals—among others. Summarize what you learned about working with these client populations with reference to addictions. Summarize, in your own words, what you learned from the readings about the population you chose. What are the salient points to keep in mind when working with these groups? What challenges do these groups face? Are there barriers to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment? What surprised you? What assumptions were challenged? What types of treatment modalities seem to best fit this group and why? What considerations must you keep in mind when selecting the treatment modality? What skills should a social worker possess (if any) in addition to the accepted ones, when working with this population?
Part II:
Select a type of treatment other than 12-step and summarize in your own words what you learned about this treatment approach. Briefly summarize the underlying theory behind this approach. What are the important goals for the therapist and the client within this particular technique? How does this differ from 12-step? How is it similar and/or complimentary to 12-step? For whom might this treatment be best?

There were several multicultural competencies discussed in the textbook (see the Appendix in your textbook titled “Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies”), and each of the competencies are important for counselor multicultural development. Of the competencies listed, elaborate as to which two stand out as the most significant or most important to you. In other words, what are the qualities of these two competencies that present themselves as more prominent than the others and why? In addition, identify and discuss the one competency listed in the textbook that would be more challenging for you to develop. Share your thoughts as to why this one would be more challenging. As part of your material review for the week, you heard Dr. Moitinho elaborate on some characteristics of culturally competent counselors from a Christian perspective. What additional Christian principle would you add to his presentation? Share your rationale for this additional principle.

Welcome to the first week of Treatment of Forensic Populations. Psychology profe
Welcome to the first week of Treatment of Forensic Populations.
Psychology professionals may work years in their professional settings and never think about treating forensic populations such as sex offenders, drug abusers and offenders, or violent offenders. In fact, many psychology professionals (and many members of the public) shy away from such populations, choosing to believe that these people are best helped by remaining “locked up” or left to the resources of a prison treatment setting. Other psychology professionals, however, see the benefits of working with challenging forensic populations—not just for the person receiving services but also for the greater social good that can come from offering services to forensic populations. Ultimately, deciding whether to specialize in the treatment of forensic populations is a personal one that requires knowledge about various forensic settings, crimes, and treatments.
This week, you examine the fundamentals of treating forensic populations. You consider a variety of forensic settings and external dimensions, that is, the factors outside of treatment that can affect practice in forensic settings such as social support, available resources, access to treatment, and other practice challenges. You also become familiar with this course as a whole and reflect on how it might help you meet some of your professional goals.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
Apply concepts and strategies related to the treatment of forensic populations to professional practice goals
Analyze similarities and differences among forensic settings (prisons, jails, community corrections)
The feelings generated when treating an individual in a forensic setting can range from sorrow to fear and nearly every emotion in between. Working with people who have been discounted by their own families and by society provides the forensic psychology professional with an opportunity to make a difference in the life of the person being treated as well as society at large. Unfortunately, such rewards can be hard earned. Treating forensic populations can be challenging, both professionally and personally. Forensic psychology professionals working in these settings must be comfortable with their surroundings, and recognize the benefits of doing this work as well as the risks that may be present.
The psychology professional working in forensic settings not only must have the clinical skills to practice in these settings but also must have a solid understanding and appreciation for the differences that forensic treatment settings present. They must also have tools for navigating the field of forensic psychology. You will find that the knowledge base, concepts, and strategies for treating forensic populations do not exist in a bubble and, therefore, you can apply what you learn in this course to different aspects of your professional career.

Comparison of Forensic Settings
The many different forensic treatment settings – prisons, jails, outpatient settings, community centers, and specialized treatment centers – provide many employment opportunities. Even within these settings, there are specific and differing programs that operate. For instance, a prison might operate a drug treatment program styled as an outpatient program, a residential drug treatment facility, a sex offender program, and general outpatient services, all in the same facility. In the outpatient setting, a forensic psychologist practitioner might be called on to conduct anger management groups, domestic violence groups, substance abuse services, and follow-up services with sex offenders after release. The diversity of practice experiences within the forensic system is impressive and sometimes even overwhelming.
But not every setting is right for every therapist. Some forensic treatment professionals are comfortable entering any correctional facility, while others might be more comfortable working at one security level but not another (e.g., a low-security facility might be more preferable than a maximum-security facility). There are forensic treatment professionals who find forensic outpatient settings similar to traditional outpatient practice and, therefore, more familiar and comfortable. It is important to assess and understand your own comfort level with the various forensic treatment settings before entering them and starting along your career path. One way of doing this is to consider the various settings and compare them based on external dimensions of forensic treatment. For example, how do the available resources compare between a maximum-security prison and a juvenile detention center? Are the practice challenges similar across the various treatment settings, or do certain challenges inhibit effective practice in one setting more than others? These kinds of comparisons can help you understand the potential challenges in a desired forensic setting. Comparing forensic settings can also provide you with possible interest in settings not previously considered, and inform you as to how external factors can impact your professional goals.

APPENDIX B
Research Proposal Project
Objectives
The idea behind this research proposal is I would like to see whether you are able to identify
outstanding issues that more research could help to clarify. Writing the proposal will then help
you achieve four important objectives:
(1) to expand your knowledge of psychology by focusing on a topic that is of particular interest
to you,
(2) to further develop your skills as a critical reader of psychological research,
(3) to develop your scientific writing skills, and
(4) to further your creativity.
General Requirements
In this research proposal, you are asked to demonstrate your ability to integrate information
across topics covered in the course. In the proposal, you should critically review an area of
psychology and then propose an experiment that would help to address an integrative
question or issue.
You are free to choose any topic related to psychology. I guess you will find that
there are a great number of potential topics you could pick. The best way would be to take
something that interests you. You should then try to define what you picked narrowly. You need
not deal with the entire topic area (e.g., all eating disorders), but choose smaller, more
manageable topic (e.g., eating disorders of first-year college students). If you define your topic
too generally there will simply be too much relevant research, making it very difficult to decide
which the most relevant papers are.
My recommendation is that you work on your proposal as you study the different chapters in our
book.
Required sections of the proposal
Your research proposal should be a minimum of 2,500 words and APA compliant.
The proposal must contain the following sections: Title page – Abstract – Introduction –
Methods– Predicted Results – References.
• Title page
• Abstract: One (1) paragraph that briefly describes the area of interest and the research
question that will be addressed in the proposal. Put the abstract on a separate page, immediately
following the title page.
• Introduction: This section should describe the research area and findings from previous
studies. Write in a goal-directed manner. By this, I mean you will eventually be proposing some
18
experiment in your proposal. Therefore, the literature review should be designed so that it
discusses an issue or question that needs to be addressed in that area and provides a rationale
for your proposed study. Moreover, you should structure your Introduction so that the motivation
for your proposal becomes clear. To achieve that you should begin with a relatively big issue
(e.g., a related example from daily life) and then focus down to the specific issue you are
interested in, highlighting the aspects of previous research (e.g. some methodological flaw in
previous approaches) that your proposal is meant to address. By the end of the Introduction the
reader should have a very good idea of what the central issue of your proposal will be. Your
Introduction should reference at least five scholarly research articles [see the section about
references]. (Minimum length of the Introduction: 750 words)
• Method: Now you are actually talking about what you are proposing. Again, be sure that this
follows naturally from the Introduction in which you should have set up and highlighted some
critical issue that needs to be resolved. What you should do now is to tell the reader how you
would resolve this issue. The Method section should describe the proposed method for the
experiment, including who the participants will be (ages and where they will be recruited from),
what equipment will be used, and the procedure that will be followed. You should specify the
variables (independent and dependent) that will be used in the experiment. You do not have to
format this section with separate subject, apparatus and procedure sections, but having that in
mind can help to guide your thinking and writing. A clearly structured Method section is very
important. (Minimum length of the Method section: 500 words)
• Predicted Results: This section should describe the results you expect from your proposed
experiment. (Minimum length: 250 words). Please note: You should use the future
tense. Do not create fake data and write the paper in past tense as if the experiment has already
been conducted. Also, you may want to think about alternatives. That is, what if the results
would turn out differently? Would there be any alternative interpretations?
• References: You must have at least five (5) primary sources. At least two (2) of the references
should be from the last two years. You must format your references using the guidelines
developed by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA).
Evaluation of Research Proposals
This form is what will be used to both grade your proposal and give you feedback about your
proposal. For each of the following, you will be given a 1-10 score, where 1 is very poor and 10
is very well (perfect really). There are ten (10) different issues outlined below. Thus, your final
mark on the proposal (out of 100) will be calculated as your total score on these questions.
Writing
1. How well did the author lay out the argument in the opening section of the paper? And,
how obvious was it where the author was going with his/her argument. That is, was the
information presented in a very scattered manner with no apparent direction, or was the
argument (and the relevance of the sections of the paper to it) obvious throughout?
2. How clearly did the author structure the Method section?
3. How well did the paper conform to the APA writing standard?
Research
19
4. How appropriate was the chosen research papers with respect to the argument the
author was suggesting?
5. How well did the author explain the relevant aspects of previous research? Was the
research understandable, and what point it makes with respect to the author’s argument?
Proposed Experiment
6. How well would the experiment, as proposed, deal with the argument the author
suggested in the introduction?
7. How well did the author use the introduction to motivate reasonable predictions about the
potential outcome(s) of the proposed experiment?
8. Was the experiment well designed? Are there any obvious design flaws?
9. How clever was the suggested experiment? That is, did the author simply suggest
looking at some existing issue as a function of some other variable with no apparent
motivation, or did the experiment represent a real attempt to either confirm or deny some
theory, or discriminate between existing views or theories? Let’s say, there is a lot of
research on how quickly we respond to circular spots popping up on a computer screen.
Then an experiment would be less clever if it just looked at how quick we are when the
spots are square-shaped.
10. How realistic is the predicted outcome of the experiments? Does the author mention any
alternatives?
For your assistance, I have include an example and a checklist to evaluate your research
proposal.
