    Hidden Gem
The Hidden Gem is a pathway that takes small parts, or “gems,” from each model. It’s a good fit if there are truly wonderful parts of both models that you don’t want to let go of, but in large part the models don’t work. Refer to Figure 7-1, Starting Point for a Hidden Gem on page 149 of Creating Great Choices.
Example: Imagine you’re a television producer of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, popular American television series in which a single man or woman auditions potential romantic partners in hopes of finding a husband or wife. Each week, the Bachelor or Bachelorette hands roses to the contestants they wish to continue seeing. If a contestant doesn’t get a rose, it means that they’re leaving the show. To make a show like this work, it’s important that producers find contestants with good personalities that audiences like to watch.
The Problem: As the producer, you notice that some of the contestants that audiences love to watch aren’t being given roses. For instance, Evan, from The Bachelorette season 12, was goofy, cringeworthy, but lots of fun. Likewise, Carly, from The Bachelor season 19, was so fun and bubbly, and you wanted the Bachelor to keep her around just to get to hang out with her. However, neither Evan or Carly were chosen, and both had to leave the show.
As the producer, you need to find a way to capitalize on the popularity of Evan and Carly. What do you do? The Hidden Gem solution ended up being a new show called Bachelor in Paradise, which only featured previous contestants. In other words, the producer took the small working parts from the other TV show and created a new one.

  • STEP 1: Find a popular news article from within the past five years that reports

STEP 1: Find a popular news article from within the past five years that reports on the results of a research study related to lifespan development. This should not be a blog entry, but a published article from a news source such as Time Magazine, The New York Times, Newsweek, NPR, CNN, Fox News, etc. A great place to look is the APA’s Psychology news portal. Read through the article and ensure that it is descriptive and sufficiently long enough in order to draw conclusions from the original research mentioned.
STEP 2: Go find the psychological study or studies that are mentioned in the news report. Sometimes those are not freely available online, so you may have to track down the original study through the library’s website. The study should have been performed within the past five years.
STEP 3: Write a paper between 500-750 words that:
    describes and summarizes both articles
describes the research method, research design, hypothesis, independent and dependent variables (if applicable), and any reliability or validity concerns
compares and contrasts the key points, style, and purpose of the news article with that of the research article
examines if the news article accurately describes the research
includes correct APA citations (both in-text and in a reference page) for both of the articles (See Purdue Online Writting Lab APA guidelines for reference).
MUST BE IN APA WITH INTEXT CITATIONS AT LEAST 4 SOURCES

Part of the process, of developing into an effective therapist, is the ability to reflect upon your personal experiences in life, who you are as an individual, and how your experiences impact your ability to develop a therapeutic relationship. The theorist, Virginia Satir, was a strong advocate for developing clinicians to take time to work through their unfinished business, in order to be present and emotionally healthy. Being able to self reflect is pertinent to the therapeutic profession. The purpose of this journal entry is to reflect upon yourself as an individual and future group facilitator.
Every family experiences challenges in either the nuclear or extended family. Think of a particular family challenge you have experienced. Based on the knowledge you have gained between Weeks 3-6 select one of the theories from your readings to address your family challenge using the outline provided below. The theory you select for this journal entry cannot be Bowen or the one you will use for your final theory presentation due Week 7.
Provide an overview of the issue (which member of the family was involved, where did the challenge originate from (is this a generational issue), etc).
How did the issue impact your family structure?
How did the issue impact you?
Discuss which specific interventions you would use from the theory to treat the challenge.
Examples of challenges include but are not limited to:
    Disruption in communication
    Death of a family member
    Divorce
    Substance use
    Health of a family member
    Marriage
    Life cycle changes
    Other challenges
