I foresee one of the biggest ethical issues for me, even in the line of work that I do, is when to break confidentiality. Now I know the textbook answer on when you can and can’t break confidentiality, but I worry that I am misinterpreting the situation. As a crisis counselor for 988, the national suicide prevention line, I talk to people all the time who are currently in a state of crisis. Now regardless of how significant, or insignificant, that problem may seem to me, I have to gauge the intent, desire, and means that this stranger has to potentially harm themselves or others. Now I know, all I can do is my best with the information that I have, but my biggest fear is that I will judge the situation so poorly that it hurts the caller in some way rather than help them. The legal issues in counseling can look like a variety of different situations some of which may directly violate your own ethical values. Legal issues can be criminal activity involving a minor child, sexual misconduct, breach of confidentiality, suicide, violation of civil rights, etc. (Kottler 2015). In the job field I have chosen I have been told that the more experience you have the more accurate your judgments and “gut feelings” become, but when it comes to someone’s life I think you can never be too careful. I have learned to trust myself and the training that I have received, and I am always learning new information so I can always be the best version of myself. As this is fairly new territory due to the lack of a road map or proper guidance as to what is acceptable in a situation of confidentiality. As the text states, your first client is a 16-year-old boy involved in criminal activity with the possibility of being abused at home. This situation is possible in any counseling session. As a counselor you are unsure of whether to inform the parents of his doings or report abuse to social services. The duty of a counselor is for the well-being of the client, in this case the 16-year-old boy. In this situation both the parents and possibly social services need to be contacted but there will be a breach in confidentiality. Every client has their own personalized process of handling similar situations. There are also rules and laws that can be followed. The consultation of an experienced practitioner should be seeked in an event where there can be conflicting outcomes. In a situation as such, as counselor it is important to analyze the information given by the client. Differentiating the truth can be timely and difficult. However, the client’s safety and well-being are important. If the client does say they are in a situation where help is needed, then it is ethical to report the information to the right authorities; this is done with the client’s consent. Without the client’s consent, reporting the information can easily break trust in the relationship and instill fear to the client. The possibility of the client being placed in more danger should be considered. Each state and place of practice has their own rules and regulations as to what can be reported and what is confidential. In many cases it is left to the counselor to decide. Applying the methodologies you’ve learned about is the goal of the next assignments, and this step can be quite challenging. A key to being successful in this class is not just summarizing methodologies, but demonstrating your ability to put them into practice. Two key areas that can be particularly challenging are identifying the data collection tool you’re recommending and the analysis methodology.
For tools, these can be interviews, surveys, questionnaires, tests, observations, and other approaches. You cannot just name a tool without details and justification or that you’ll just make one. For an established tool, you need to cite its development and validation and explain why it is useful. For a tool you’ll develop, you need to explain how it will be developed and validated.
For analysis methodology, you need to provide strong details on how the analysis will actually occur. Remember, this is a research methods course, so methods are critical. For qualitative, you need to explain and justify the coding methodology. For quantitative, you’ll need to identify and justify the specific inferential statistic(s) appropriate for the data you’re collecting and to answer your research question.
