It is essential that all healthcare professionals, whether or not they are currently involved in research studies, remain aware of regulatory policies and updates such as the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects, or Common Rule, that will take effect January 2019.

Although you are not implementing a change project at this time, and you may not be directly involved in research as part of your professional responsibilities, explain the reasons why it is important for you to know about these rights and protections.

The Patient Experience Measurement Program (PEMP) is one of the national transformation initiatives launched in Saudi Arabia as part of the country’s Vision 2030 plan. The program aims to improve the quality of healthcare services by measuring patient experiences and using this information to make data-driven improvements.
The history of the PEM program can be traced back to 2015, when the Ministry of Health established a national patient experience measurement framework. This framework was designed to measure patient satisfaction with healthcare services and to identify areas where improvements could be made (Ministry of Health, 2023).The Ministry of Health launched the PEM program as a pilot project in four hospitals in Riyadh.
The PEM program aims to: Measure patient experiences with healthcare services in Saudi Arabia and Identify areas for improvement in healthcare service delivery. Develop strategies and initiatives to improve patient experiences. Monitor progress towards achieving the goals of the program.
The PEM program uses various methods to measure patient experiences, including surveys, focus groups, and patient feedback. The data collected is used to develop initiatives and strategies to improve patient experiences.
The PEM program has made significant progress. The program has been implemented in many hospitals and healthcare centers across Saudi Arabia. The program has also expanded to include measuring patient experiences in primary healthcare centers.
One such study was conducted by AlRuthia et al. (2020) and published in the Journal of Patient Experience. The study’s objective was to explore patients’ experiences and perceptions of the quality of care provided in a tertiary care hospital in Saudi Arabia.
The study utilized a cross-sectional design and included 422 patients admitted to the hospital between January and June 2018. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire developed based on the SERVQUAL model, which is common in measuring service quality in healthcare.
The questionnaire included five measures of service experience: tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. Each measure was measured using multiple items, and patients were required to rate their level of satisfaction with each item on a five-point Likert scale.
The study found that patients’ perceptions of service quality were generally positive, with the highest mean score being for the empathy dimension and the lowest for the reliability dimension (AlRuthia et al ., 2020). The authors noted that the findings could be used to identify areas for improvement in the quality of care provided in the hospital.
In terms of the methods and measurements utilized in the study design related to the content of this module, the study’s use of the SERVQUAL model is relevant to the topic of patient-centered care. The model focuses on patients’ perceptions of service quality, an important aspect of patient-centered care. Additionally, the study’s use of a self-administered questionnaire is a common method for measuring patient experiences and perceptions in healthcare research.

Socio-cultural factors include consumers’ lifestyles, buying habits, education, religion, beliefs, values, demographics, social classes, sexuality and attitudes. These factors determine the suitability of an organisation’s products and services for its customers’ needs. They can include things like your education level, your exposure to violence, the way your community is designed, and if you have access to health care. What are the sociocultural influences that affect customer decision-making when considering healthcare services? The sociocultural elements include the family life cycle, social class, reference groups, and culture.
Family Life Cycle describes the stages the typical consumer passes through from childhood through the death of a spouse. Family decision-making becomes dominated by either husband or wife.
Social class: defined as relatively stable and homogenous divisions in society in which individuals, families, or groups share relatively similar interests, values, lifestyles, and behaviors. A combination of factors determines whether an individual belongs to one social class versus another. Income, education level, source of net worth, and type of housing are but a few of these factors.
Reference groups: a group of one or more people an individual uses as a basis of comparison regarding his or her beliefs, feelings, or behaviors. A reference group can affect a person in three ways: 1. offering information 2. Providing rewards for specific behavior 3. Enhancing an individual’s self-image.
Culture: refers to the values, attitudes, and ideas that are transmitted from one generation to another within a group of homogeneous individuals. These values, such as an achievement or success, might influence decision- making.
