Part of the process, of developing into an effective therapist, is the ability to reflect upon your personal experiences in life, who you are as an individual, and how your experiences impact your ability to develop a therapeutic relationship. The theorist, Virginia Satir, was a strong advocate for developing clinicians to take time to work through their unfinished business, in order to be present and emotionally healthy. Being able to self reflect is pertinent to the therapeutic profession. The purpose of this journal entry is to reflect upon yourself as an individual and future group facilitator.
Every family experiences challenges in either the nuclear or extended family. Think of a particular family challenge you have experienced. Based on the knowledge you have gained between Weeks 3-6 select one of the theories from your readings to address your family challenge using the outline provided below. The theory you select for this journal entry cannot be Bowen or the one you will use for your final theory presentation due Week 7.
Provide an overview of the issue (which member of the family was involved, where did the challenge originate from (is this a generational issue), etc).
How did the issue impact your family structure?
How did the issue impact you?
Discuss which specific interventions you would use from the theory to treat the challenge.
Examples of challenges include but are not limited to:
    Disruption in communication
    Death of a family member
    Divorce
    Substance use
    Health of a family member
    Marriage
    Life cycle changes
    Other challenges

Compare independent variables, dependent variables, and extraneous variables. Describe two ways that researchers attempt to control extraneous variables. Support your answer with peer-reviewed articles.
    ANSWER
Independent variables, dependent variables, and extraneous variables are fundamental concepts in research design, particularly in experimental and observational studies. Here’s a comparison of these variables, along with two methods researchers use to control extraneous variables, supported by peer-reviewed articles:
    **Independent Variables (IV):**
    – Definition: The independent variable is the variable that researchers manipulate or control in an experiment to observe its effect on the dependent variable.
    – Example: In a study investigating the impact of a new drug on blood pressure, the drug dosage is the independent variable.
    **Dependent Variables (DV):**
    – Definition: The dependent variable is the variable that researchers measure or observe to assess the effects of changes in the independent variable.
    – Example: In the same drug study, blood pressure readings are the dependent variable.
    **Extraneous Variables (EV):**
    – Definition: Extraneous variables are variables other than the independent and dependent variables that may affect the study’s outcome if left uncontrolled.
    – Example: In the drug study, factors like participants’ age, diet, physical activity, or baseline health could be extraneous variables.
    **Methods to Control Extraneous Variables:**
    1. **Randomization:**
    – Description: Randomization involves assigning participants to different experimental groups or conditions in a random and unpredictable manner. This process helps distribute potential extraneous variables equally across groups, minimizing their impact.
    – Supporting Research:
    – A study by Schulz and Grimes (2002) titled “Randomized Controlled Trials in the Evaluation of Health Services: Concepts and Methods” emphasizes the importance of randomization in reducing bias and controlling extraneous variables in clinical trials.
    2. **Matching:**
    – Description: Researchers match participants in different groups based on specific characteristics relevant to the study. This technique ensures that extraneous variables are equally distributed among groups, allowing for more accurate comparisons.
    – Supporting Research:
    – A study by Rubin (1973) titled “Matching to Remove Bias in Observational Studies” discusses the use of matching to control extraneous variables in observational studies and its implications for reducing bias.
These methods are crucial in experimental and observational research to enhance the internal validity of a study by minimizing the influence of extraneous variables. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that complete control over all extraneous variables may not always be feasible, and researchers must carefully consider their study design and statistical analysis to address potential confounding factors.

    Directions:
    Role in Conflict Management
As a nurse leader or manager, you are responsible for conflict management.
    First Post
Describe how you would handle a conflict between two nurses on the unit. Include how you would meet with each nurse and how you will document the situation. Is there anyone else you would ask for assistance and how you would identify if the conflict has been resolved or you need to escalate to your supervisor.
    Reply Post
Respond to at least one of your peers. Expand on your peer’s ideas.
    Note:
“Expand on your peer’s ideas” needs more than 1 – 2 sentences for an acceptable reply.

If you refer to a website or article, be sure to cite it in APA format. This prevents plagiarism and allows your fellow students to review the cites and increase the class knowledge base.
Please make your initial post by midweek, and respond to at least one other student’s post by the end of the week. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

You are going to create a handout(ex:powerpoint) (including a separate reference page) that summarizes the issue you are going to discuss BASED ON THE ARTICLES YOU REVIEWED IN PART 1. (the annotated bibliography that was done before this (order# 392225230)
    Suggested Format:
Introduction – overview of the issue and definition. For example, if choosing “betrayal”, you must state how this has been defined by the authors in your articles and which definition you will be using in the presentation.
What is known about your topic? Provide relevant statistics (you will find much information in your articles’ introductory paragraphs).
What theories about your topic exist? To again use “betrayal” as an example, identify theories that attempt to explain “betrayal” – why does such a concept exist? What explains why one person may feel betrayed, when another does not, about the same event?
What questions have researchers asked about your topic?
    What did they find?
Conclusion – summarize and pull together authors’ conclusions from various articles into one coherent statement about your topic.
