Pretend you are a “mad scientist” in the process of creating Frankenstein’s monster. To complete the “monster,” you must transplant a brain, however, you have run into a major problem- there are no whole brains available! Thus, you must now go to the local brain junkyard and create the monster’s brain, using ONLY 5 anatomical parts and 3 neurotransmitters!
Monster: an imaginary creature with human and/or animal features, that may include but is not limited to, being unusual, powerful, and/or extremely large in size.
First, decide on a type of monster. What behaviors, skills, and/or personality characteristics will the monster have?
Next, choose the 5 most important anatomical parts of the brain needed to get this monster going. Explain WHY these parts of the brain were chosen.
Identify and describe the functions of at least 3 neurotransmitters important in the creation of the monster’s brain.
Finally, just for fun, what is the monster’s name?

  • how instructional design is informed by student learning theory

In this week’s discussion, we will examine how instructional design is informed by student learning theory. Select one motivational and one learning theory that was presented in NUR 660 and apply them to the instructional design process (if you have not yet taken NUR 660, you have access to the textbook on VitalSource and your nursing texts also include learning theories).
    Identify the theories you selected
Explain why you are drawn to these theories.
In a practical/concrete way, discuss how they will inform your decisions as you design your online course.
How might these theories help you to quickly adapt your curriculum to current events (e.g. the pandemic) or changes in the health care system?
Don’t overdo your answers to 1 and 2. Provide only enough information about the theories to support your answers to 3 and 4. Feel free to integrate these responses instead of thinking you have to answer them with a paragraph per question.
    ANSWER
    Selected Motivational and Learning Theories
    Motivational Theory: Self-Determination Theory (SDT)
SDT posits that individuals are motivated by three basic psychological needs: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. When these needs are met, individuals are more likely to experience positive emotions, engage in self-regulated behavior, and persist in the face of challenges.
I am drawn to SDT because it emphasizes the importance of fostering intrinsic motivation in learners. Intrinsic motivation arises from within the individual and is driven by a desire to learn for personal satisfaction or growth. In contrast, extrinsic motivation arises from external factors, such as rewards or punishments, and is often less sustainable.
    Learning Theory: Constructivism
Constructivism asserts that learners actively construct their own understanding of the world based on their prior experiences and interactions with new information. This theory emphasizes the importance of providing learners with opportunities to engage in active learning experiences, such as problem-solving, collaboration, and reflection.
I am drawn to constructivism because it aligns with my belief that learners should be active participants in their own learning process. By providing learners with opportunities to construct their own understanding, we can help them develop deeper and more meaningful knowledge.
    Application to Instructional Design
SDT and constructivism can inform my decisions as I design an online course in the following ways:
    SDT:
Provide opportunities for competence: Design learning activities that allow learners to experience success and build their confidence.
Encourage autonomy: Allow learners to make choices about their learning path and pace.
Foster relatedness: Create a supportive learning environment where learners feel connected to their peers and instructors.
    Constructivism:
Use active learning strategies: Incorporate hands-on activities, simulations, and case studies to engage learners in the learning process.
Encourage collaboration: Provide opportunities for learners to work together on projects and discussions.
Promote reflection: Encourage learners to reflect on their learning experiences and synthesize their understanding.
Adapting to Current Events and Changes
SDT and constructivism can also help me quickly adapt my curriculum to current events or changes in the healthcare system in the following ways:
    SDT:
Identify and address learners’ concerns: Be responsive to learners’ anxieties and provide support as needed.
Connect learning to real-world issues: Use current events and healthcare trends as examples and case studies.
Emphasize the relevance of learning: Help learners see how the course material is applicable to their professional practice.
    Constructivism:
Incorporate new information into existing frameworks: Help learners integrate new knowledge with their existing understanding.
Encourage critical thinking: Guide learners in evaluating information and forming their own conclusions.
Foster lifelong learning: Encourage learners to develop the skills and mindset to adapt to ongoing changes in the healthcare field.
By incorporating the principles of SDT and constructivism into my instructional design, I can create an online course that is engaging, motivating, and adaptable to current events and changes in the healthcare system.

Chapter 2 covers “cognitive neuroscience” – a catchy and impressive sounding item. What is cognitive neuroscience and how does it apply to you personally and professionally? Why is it important to study this particular field of psychology? How will you apply this to your personal and professional life?
Perception – objects look different from different viewpoints and where perception meets memory. Looking at the various theories – can you see why two people can see or hear the same thing differently? This is why eye-witness testimony is suspect (pardon the pun) but yet is crucial in many criminal prosecutions. What are your thoughts on perception? Which theory stands out as the “best” explanation?

For this assignment use Jakob Nielson’s examples of Heuristics to review either the Maryland MVA website (mva.maryland.gov) or the White House website (whitehouse.gov)
In this assignment, you will imagine that you are one of the experts being called to do an evaluation of one of the websites.
Nielson speaks about Heuristics in this (video) and more on the subject for your use in this assignment can be found here and here. More resources on the subject can be found here.
What should be in your report:
On this Bb Discussion Board section, post a PDF report that includes the following:
    1. Provide a defense as to why the website does or does not meet the heuristics covered. You may provide a table of the list of the heuristics with a yes or no next to the heuristic title to denote whether the heuristic is achieved in your opinion. But you must provide commentary and defend your stance. Your assignment should be 2-3 pages in length.
    2. Provide screenshots that help illustrate your points (if screenshots are not possible, provide
    sketches)
    3. Also provide recommendations on what you would propose to help the website meet the heuristics based on your knowledge gained through the class and beyond.
The primary goal of the assignment is that you thoughtfully defend a rationale for why the system meets the heuristic requirements. Keep the following in mind:
Your document should be well-organized, easy to read, and free of typos and formatting errors.
In your analysis, focus on a few of the feature(s) or aspect(s) of the user interface. You should only journey down through 3 levels maximum of the website, that way you are not overloaded with examples. For instance, homepage>about us>Staff>Bios would be three levels down from the homepage.
Try to avoid using words like “intuitive” and “user-friendly” and be as precise as possible in your explanation of why the website does or does not meet the heuristics. Use your knowledge of the Laws of UX and the modules that we have covered in the close thus far and make explicit reference to them.
For example, avoid saying that it simply “looks nice” Use your critical thinking, knowledge, and skillful eye to explain what makes it look that way. Don’t just say the interface “doesn’t make sense.” Explain what specifically makes it so.
You may also use the following as a rubric to assist you:
Overall severity rating on a scale of 0–4
0 = I don’t agree that this is a usability problem at all
1 = Cosmetic problem only: need not be fixed unless extra time is available on project 2 = Minor usability problem: fixing this should be given low priority
3 = Major usability problem: important to fix, so should be given high priority
4 = Usability catastrophe: imperative to fix this before the product can be released (Nielsen)
